Betting company SportPesa has said it is not planning to withdraw its sponsorship from Gor Mahia and AFC Leopard following the recent cancellation of their operating licence.
SportPesa’s payment services and paybill numbers have been withdrawn after the government accused them of tax evasion and illegal operations.
Chief Executive Officer Ronald Karauri assured the teams that have relied on the firm through various sponsorship deals that all is well and that there is no plan to withdraw from the sponsorship.
“We will continue to sponsor teams despite all these challenges,” Karauri said.
The two club managements are sweating and fearing for the worst as the stalemate between the government and betting firms continue
“SportPesa sponsorship accounts for 80 per cent of our budget, therefore, it would be impossible to operate without them,” AFC Leopard secretary general Oliver Shikuku said adding that they hope that the firm and the government will agree and resolve the stalemate.
Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Kariobangi Sharks are among some of the beneficiaries of the firm’s sponsorship.
