Long distance runner Eliud Kipchoge has been named the world male athlete of the year.
Kipchoge won the coveted prize for the second year running, just weeks after he pulled off a breathtaking sub-2 hour marathon run with a time of 1:59.40. in Vienna, Austria.
He became the only human being to have run a full marathon in less than two hours.
The announcement was made by World Athletics body on its Twitter handle.
In his acceptance speech, the world marathon record holder said he was happy to have made history and held out hope that his achievement would be an inspiration.
“I hope I inspire the human race. I’m just really happy to make history. I hope it was a big inspiration to the next generation, ” he said.
Kipchoge was tipped to win the award due to his good form since last year and his humility.
Kipchoge has cultivated, over the years, a reputation for humility and discipline, traits that have powered his rise to global stardom.
In spite of his high profile, he is known to lead a very simple life.
