UON student dies in Busia after tree falls on him

A University of Nairobi student died on the spot after a tree he was cutting fell on him in Ojame village, Teso South constituency.
Maurice Okware wanted to use the tree to prepare bricks for sale to raise school fees before the unfortunate incident happened.
Okware was trying to prevent the tree from falling on a neighbour’s house when it fell on him.
The Thursday incident happened after he rushed to push the tree to prevent it from falling on a neighbour’s house.
His parents Charles Ariku and Magdeline Akwenyat described him as an industrious, obedient and jovial son.
His father said he was to travel back to the university on Friday as he had not reported since they opened on September 9.
“My son wanted to leave the bricks burning then we were to sell and send him money to pay fees,” he said.
“We ate lunch together on Thursday and he later went back to cut the trees only to be told in the evening that the tree fell on him and he died on the spot,” she said.
The Bachelor of Science Micro Biology and Biotechnology student was in his third year and sold bricks to pay school fees.
Akwenyat regretted that he met his death while working to ensure he completes his studies.
