Sonko suspends 16 officials over Precious Talent school tragedy

After the tragedy at Precious Talent School on Monday which left eight pupils dead and 64 others injured, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has suspended 16 county officials to pave way for investigations.
The suspended officials are from the Urban Planning Department.
“I have suspended the following Nairobi City County Government officials with immediate effect, to facilitate impartial investigations into the Dagoretti school building collapse and systems audit in the Urban Planning Department,” wrote Sonko on Facebook Wednesday.
Sonko said he will not settle until rogue officials flouting Physical Planning Regulations are dealt with to return sanity in the department.
Sonko has since appointed Pauline Kahiga, the executive in charge of Finance and Economic Planning as acting executive in the Urban Planning docket.
He also appointed Veska Kangogo as the Health executive on acting capacity.
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has also closed St Catherine School in Kibra saying the classrooms are unsafe for pupils.
“From now onwards, the government will shut down all the schools similar to the Precious Talent School to enhance pupils’ safety,” said Magoha.
The injured students were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
Sonko said his government will settle all the funeral expenses of the eight pupils who died.
