Raila weeps during Kadenge’s requiem mass


Opposition chief Raila Odinga broke down during the requiem mass of soccer legend Joe Kadenge.
The ODM leader was among the mourners who attended the ceremony at Friends Church on Ngong Road on Wednesday.
Raila was captured in tears during the mass which brought together politicians mostly from Western region.
Kadenge, 84, died at Nairobi Hospital on July 7.
Raila disclosed the other day that plans were at an advanced stage to rename Nairobi’s City Stadium in honour of the late Joe Kadenge.
Speaking at Charter Hall in Nairobi on Tuesday evening during a fundraiser to help offset funeral expenses of the late Kadenge,
Raila said he made the request to President Uhuru Kenyatta who accepted and both have formally spoken to Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko to ensure this happens soon.
“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honour,” said Raila.
Before his death, Raila visited the ailing icon as a “legendary footballer.
He recognised Kadenge for being the first footballer to score a goal in the first-ever Kenya Premier League.
“For years we were captivated by his seemingly effortless skill and among his numerous achievements is the fact that he scored the first-ever goal in the Kenya Premier League,” Raila said.
