Itumbi charged for authoring fake Ruto assassination letter

State House director of digital and new media Dennis Itumbi has been charged with producing a false document and publishing the same without authority.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot on Monday, Itumbi was also charged with interfering with a mobile phone programme.
“Denis Njue Itumbi: On June 20, at an unknown place within Kenya made a document to wit a letter dated May 30, purporting to be a genuine letter made by a cabinet secretary a fact you knew to be false,” read the charge sheet.
The prosecution did not oppose his bail request but asked for strict bond terms.
The prosecution also asked the court to bar Itumbi from publishing anything on social media related to this case.
Itumbi’s lawyer Katwa Kigen had requested to be given the phone so that they can also carry out their independent analysis on the phone, but the court declined.
The Samsung note 9 that was allegedly reprogrammed will be used as an exhibit and will not be given to the defence.
Cheruiyot ordered Itumbi’s release on the strength of the bail he had deposited in the miscellaneous application.
The court also declined to bar Itumbi from posting anything on social media.
Itumbi was released on Sh100,000 bail on July 10.
