Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has suffered a major blow after the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai ordered the withdrawal of police from assisting it in its operations.
Mutyambai said in some of the said operations, especially during crackdowns, extortion allegations have emerged tainting police image.
His directive comes as police open investigations into claims that the society paid peanuts to artistes in music royalties.
Detectives have been sent to the society’s offices to probe its activities in the past, following an outcry from artistes.
Artistes were paid Sh2,500 as royalties. President Uhuru Kenyatta is one of those who said the meagre payments showed there was a problem at MCSK.
The President ordered police to probe all organisations that collected money on behalf of musicians.
“The music industry has a problem that should be looked into. Recently we were told that an organisation collected around Sh200 million on behalf of musicians and then claimed that they spent 60 per cent of that money as administrative expenses,” said President Uhuru.
