Business was disrupted in some parts of Mombasa town on Wednesday after Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students went on the rampage over the new directives on fee balance.
The students engaged police in running battles as they chanted anti-administration songs, accusing it of high-handedness.
Hundreds of students resorted to burning tires and barricading the busy Mombasa-Malindi highway in Buxton forcing police to use teargas to disperse them.
Dozens of students were arrested during the fracas that saw the institution closed.
Trouble started after the administration started blocking those with arrears from moving to the next level.
The students have blamed the institution for failing to consult them to discuss the new directive.
