Babu Owino wants all HELB loans to be written off

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to waive loans owed to Higher Education Loans Boards (HELB) by graduates.
Babu said President Uhuru should take the initiative to write off all the HELB loans just like he did with coffee farmers and Kenya Airways (KQ) some times back.
“If the government wrote off Sh24 billion owed by KQ, wrote off over Sh2 billion owed by coffee farmers, wrote off Sh40 billion owed by sugar milling companies, then then nothing stops it from writing off Sh6.5 billion owed by comrades,” he said.
The legislator was responding to HELB’ threat that it would publish names and lists of over 85000 loan defaulters in the media.
The MP also urged HELB to revise the loans upward before trying to shame comrades, adding that the money given to comrades is too small.
“Living standard has been on the rise since 1998 when the loans were last reviewed. HELB should increase the loans,” he said.
