Morecambe defender Christian Mbulu has died at the age of 23.
Tributes have been paid to the former Millwall, Motherwell and Crewe Alexandra defender who was found dead at his home.
Police were called to the address at Cottam near Preston on Tuesday afternoon, with the death not being treated as suspicious.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We were called at around 1.30pm today (May 26) to an address on Greenfinch Avenue, Cottam, to reports of a sudden death.
“We attended and sadly found the body of a man aged in his 20s.
“There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file will be passed to the coroner in due course
“Our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this sad time.”
After coming through the ranks at Brentwood Town, Mbulu had spells at Millwall and Motherwell, and joined Morecambe following his release from Crewe Alexandra in January.
He played three times for Morecambe in League Two this season, making his debut for The Shrimps in a 2-0 win at Walsall.
Mbulu joined Millwall from Isthmian League side Brentwood in 2015, but failed to make an appearance for The Lions in the league.
Morecambe said in a statement: “He was only 23 and the news of his sudden and untimely passing has been a shock to us all.
“Christian came to the club in January and proved to be an extremely popular member of the squad.
“His loss will be painfully felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
Millwall academy director Scott Fitzgerald said: “This is truly shocking and tragic news and our hearts go out to Christian’s family and friends,”.
“Christian was incredibly popular with team-mates and staff alike during his time here and looked set for a very bright and successful future in the game. He was thoroughly professional, hard-working and courteous and remained in close contact with many people within the club.

Barcelona appoint Koeman as new coach

Barcelona have appointed Ronald Koeman as their next coach, the club said in a statement on Wednesday, as the Catalans look to rebuild after their 8-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.
Koeman, who has left his role as manager of the Netherlands, has signed a two-year-deal with Barcelona, who sacked Quique Setien on Monday after he presided over the club’s worst defeat ever in European competition.
Koeman, who will be officially presented at the Camp Nou stadium later on Wednesday, is dearly loved at Barca for his role in Johan Cruyff’s hugely successful side known as the ‘Dream Team’ and for scoring the goal that delivered the club’s first ever European Cup in 1992.
The defender later became the club’s assistant coach before embarking on a career as a head coach, managing Dutch sides Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord plus Premier League sides Southampton and Everton and La Liga’s Valencia.
“Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have come to an agreement for him to be the team’s coach until 30 June 2022,” said Barca’s statement.
“A club legend and Barca’s hero at Wembley who gave fans their first European Cup, Koeman is coming back to the Camp Nou. But this time he will be in the dugout to lead the team.”
